Ireland is full of adventure and waiting for you to explore it. We have often rented a car from Car Rental Ireland for our adventures so we are delighted to collaborate with them on this post to share with you the most unique roads to drive in Ireland. I have explored many places in Ireland but there are a few roads that you drive that just take your breath away. In this post, I am going to share with you some of the most unique roads I have come across on my adventures in Ireland.
We also collaborated on a blog post with Car Rental Ireland where we featured a list of free things to do along the Wild Atlantic Way, check it out here. Car Rental Ireland has 9 pick up locations in Ireland so whether you are flying in from abroad and want to explore some of the most unique road trips in Ireland or you are from Ireland and want to explore whats on your doorstep… there really is no excuse.
The Dark Hedges, Armoy, Ballymoney
This road just had to make my list… the famous Dark Hedges. I heard lots about this road so while in Antrim recently, I decided to check it out for myself and I was not disappointed. This road is one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland and has been voted in the top 5 most beautiful tree tunnels in the world. The trees were planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family and two centuries later, the trees remain a spectacular sight. We can see how it was chosen for a The Game of Thrones… it is a magnificent beauty.
Looking for a unique picturesque scenic drive? The Priests Leap Mountain Pass Drive is for you. Drive on the border of Cork and Kerry. You drive over Irelands highest mountain pass at 1,500 ft from Bonane in Co. Kerry to Coomhola in Co. Cork. A hidden gem in Ireland.
The Copper Coast
The Copper Coast has some of the most beautiful roads in Ireland. Located west of Tramore in Waterford, I think it is one of the most spectacular coastal stretches in Ireland with the most picturesque and beautiful beaches spotted along the way.
The Ring of Kerry
There is a reason why the Ring of Kerry road is known as one of the prettiest drives in Ireland. The 179km circular route is one that wont disappoint with the vivid scenery, picturesque landscapes, spectacular beaches and friendly villages. Some of our favourite spots to stop off at; Ballinskelligs Beach, Derrynane, Portmagee.
The Skellig Ring
You might know the Skellig rock from the latest Star Wars Movie but trust me, this drive is one for your bucket list. All you need to do it take this detour from the Ring of Kerry. The Skellig Ring drive starts in Cahersiveen or Waterville and is just 18km but it allows you to gather spectacular views of the Skellig Islands.
Giant’s Causeway Coastal Route
I recently spent some time exploring Northern Ireland and I couldn’t recommend the Giant’s Causeway Coastal Route more. The route takes in the breathtaking coastal views, rugged landscape and picturesque scenery. With lots of activities and things to do along the way, it is definitely worth the drive.
