While recently exploring the Wild Atlantic Way we grew excited every time we discovered a new hidden gem… by far the most unexpected one was the Skelligs chocolate factory! Located in the most beautiful of surroundings, right in the middle of the Skellig ring (just off the ring of Kerry) – overlooking the majestic Skellig rocks, (which have recently been used for the latest Star Wars movie), stumbling upon the chocolate paradise most definitely brought a smile to our faces that day!
As soon as we set foot inside the factory, the distinctive chocolate aroma left my taste buds tingling. The factory is open plan in style, which allowed us to clearly see the production of artisan handmade chocolates. As we watched the thick streams of chocolate – white, milk and dark flow through the machines, my mouth began to water!
I was only delighted when a friendly staff member stepped up and asked us if we’d like to try some samples…. why of course! She prepared very generous samples for us… including some of the most unusual flavours; orange, marshmallow and honeycomb, champagne and strawberries… even gin and tonic flavour! Each sample was more enjoyable than the next!
I watched on in fascination as the chocolatiers at the factory crafted delicious rich chocolates using a variety of different techniques and skills! Such a wonderful talent! We were overwhelmed when Aine one of the chocolatiers presented OnTheQT with a very special present… our very own personalised chocolate shoe! #wow
There is a large selection of chocolate available to purchase at the factory, all beautifully wrapped and presented making the perfect gift to bring home for someone special! Whether you’re looking for wedding favours, a birthday present or simply something to brighten up someone’s day… you’ll be sure to find something suitable here! There is also a café, so that you can indulge on more chocolate treats before leaving! Everything served at the factory and café is chocolate based… even the hot chocolate is made from REAL chocolate melted down… what a taste bud sensation!
As the chocolate factory is located right across from the stunning St, Finians bay, why not head over there after to explore the numerous rock pools, paddle in the seaside or watch the surfers as they ride a wave all the way into shore. You could finish off your day by continuing on the Skellig Ring to either the quaint fishing village of Portmagee or beautiful Ballinskelligs!
Skelligs chocolate factory is a signature experience on the Wild Atlantic Way, just 15 minutes off the Ring of Kerry road and only an hours drive from Killarney! It is without a doubt worth putting on the to do list! I’m sure you’ll have no problem convincing someone to accompany you!
